Working with a Toronto Dietitian-Nutritionist: What Makes Jackie Silver Nutrition Unique?

Expertise in Neurodivergent Nutrition

Supporting neurodivergent individuals requires specialized knowledge, and that’s where we shine. We have experience working with individuals with ADHD, autism, and intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD), helping them develop sustainable eating habits that fit their unique needs and brains.

Our expertise includes:

  • SOS-Trained Techniques: These strategies help selective eaters and those with sensory challenges feel more comfortable trying new foods. We typically use SOS techniques when working with selective eaters, to gradually expand food variety.
  • Mindfulness-Based Eating Awareness Training (MBEAT): We encourage mindful eating habits that reduce stress and promote intuitive eating. This can include getting in touch with your hunger & fullness cues and learning how to honor your body’s cravings.
  • Collaboration with Caregivers & Schools: We work with other health professionals, families, educators, and group homes to create a supportive nutrition environment. We often do sessions with multiple family members or other caregivers to best support our clients!

Inclusive Care Philosophy

Jackie Silver Nutrition was founded on the belief that nutrition should be accessible, inclusive, and free from guilt or restriction. Our approach is rooted in a weight-inclusive, Health at Every Size (HAES) philosophy, which emphasizes that health exists on a spectrum that includes people of all shapes, sizes, backgrounds, and abilities.

We focus on the many indicators of health, such as blood test results, energy levels, gut symptoms, mood, focus, and more, that are unrelated to the number on a scale. Our goal is to empower individuals to create a positive relationship with food, free from shame or pressure, and prioritize overall well-being.

Culturally Competent Care

We recognize that Toronto is one of the most diverse cities in the world, home to individuals and families from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. With this in mind, we are committed to offering culturally competent care that is respectful, inclusive, and responsive to each person’s unique cultural identity and experiences.

At Jackie Silver Nutrition, we continually strive to learn and grow in our understanding of different food traditions, dietary practices, and cultural values around health and wellness. While we have had the opportunity to work with individuals from many backgrounds and have gained experience with a variety of food customs and recipes, we also understand that culture is deeply personal. We approach each interaction with openness, humility, and a genuine desire to learn from the people we work with.

5 stars with a thumbs up

Please note that names have been changed to respect client confidentiality.

I reached out to Jackie when my son who was diagnosed with Autism was becoming very selective with his eating. We had daily struggles and many meltdowns when we couldn’t figure out what he would eat as he was even losing the love for his “safe foods.” Jackie helped us to discuss ways to get better nutrition in without changing a whole lot to my son’s foods that he would eat. She also helped to come up with new foods to try based on what he does already like, and to continue to try foods he may have avoided previously. We learned different ways to encourage our son to help make meals, try foods, and clean up – which altogether added more excitement at meal times. We started with Jackie in November 2024, and are now ending services with her in April 2025 as we have reached all of our goals and made HUGE strides. We eat together as a family now without having to plans a second meal to be ready if he doesn’t eat (he will almost at least try anything now, or at least eat 1-2 things on his plate), we have had more success eating out at restaurants as there is food he will eat, and we haven’t had meltdowns surrounding food in quite some time. Jackie was a huge help and I cannot recommend her enough.

-Leslie

Working with Jackie was such a positive experience. I had recently been diagnosed with ADHD and the medication had contributed to rapid weight loss. I stopped having hunger cues and when I would try to eat, I couldn’t eat a lot. I’ve always had very specific food preferences too which made eating enough calories now very difficult. Jackie was able to work with all of my dietary requirements and provide solutions that were easily incorporated into my daily life. Grocery shopping, prepping, and cooking food has always been a struggle and Jackie really made it all feel so easy. I’ve been able to maintain my weight now and feel that I have the right tools to keep this consistent with strategies for when things are really hard. Thanks Jackie!!

-Katie

Hi Maurya at Jackie Silver Nutrition,
Thank you so much for guiding me through meal planning and new food options that will help me manage both Celiac Disease and Osteoporosis. Food is such a big part of our lives; we take it for granted until something unexpected happens and suddenly meals are not as care-free. I have appreciated your professional, encouraging and affirming approach to suggesting foods with the nutritional value and taste that will work for me. It was an absolute pleasure to work with you! Thank you for your support, professional knowledge and pace as we worked towards solutions to manage a new lifestyle!

-Christine

So I’ve met with a handful of dietitians and Jackie is the first to be able to both accommodate for my ADHD and provide accessible solutions to problems I’ve had for years. Some of the recipes she helped me find are now staples in my week. For the first time in my adult life, I eat breakfast every day (and even look forward to it), and most days I also eat lunch, supper, and have enough snacks to give me the energy I need to live an active lifestyle. I would 100% recommend Jackie to anyone, and especially other anxious, adhd, or otherwise neurodivergent people.
