Why Work with an Autism Dietitian?
Autism can impact eating habits in many ways, potentially making mealtime stressful for both individuals and their families. A specialized autism dietitian provides expert guidance to help navigate these challenges.
Common Nutrition Challenges for Autistic Individuals

Many autistic children and adults experience:
- Sensory Sensitivities: Certain textures, temperatures, and flavors may be overwhelming or unpleasant, making it difficult to eat a well-balanced diet.
- Selective Eating (Picky Eating): A limited range of preferred foods which can lead to nutrient deficiencies, malnutrition, or difficulty maintaining a varied diet.
- Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID): ARFID is more common among autistic individuals and goes beyond typical picky eating. It can involve intense food avoidance due to sensory sensitivities, fear of choking or vomiting, or lack of interest in eating, often resulting in significant nutritional and growth concerns.
- Routine-Based Eating: Autistic individuals often thrive on routine, and disruptions to mealtimes or new food introductions can sometimes cause stress.
- Digestive Concerns: Many autistic people experience gastrointestinal (GI) issues like constipation, bloating, reflux, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
- Nutritional Deficiencies: A restrictive diet or avoidance of certain food groups may result in low levels of essential nutrients like protein, fiber, iron, B12, vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids.
An autism dietitian understands these challenges and provides evidence-based, individualized strategies to support better eating habits and overall well-being.

Specialized Support for Autism-Related Nutrition Concerns
An experienced autism dietitian can provide guidance on a range of issues, including:

1. Selective Eating, ARFID & Expanding Food Variety
Many autistic individuals prefer a small set of familiar foods and struggle with trying new ones. In some cases, this may be related to Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), which involves more intense food avoidance due to sensory sensitivities, fear of choking or vomiting, or low interest in food. An autism dietitian nutritionist can help with gradual food exposure techniques and sensory-friendly food introductions to expand dietary variety without pressure.
2. Meal Planning for Sensory Preferences
If certain textures, colors, or temperatures are uncomfortable, an autism dietitian can recommend alternative options that offer the same nutrients while being mindful of sensory needs and incorporating safe foods. We can also collaborate with autistic adults to create simple meal planning systems, ensuring balanced meals that are easy to prepare.
3. Managing Digestive Issues
Gastrointestinal (GI) problems like constipation, bloating, diarrhea, IBS, and reflux are common in autistic individuals. An autism dietitian can assess dietary triggers, recommend fiber-rich foods, and suggest gut-friendly nutrition strategies to improve digestion.
4. Addressing Nutrient Deficiencies
Nutrient gaps are common in individuals with restricted diets. An autism dietitian or autism nutritionist can assess intake and recommend food sources or supplements to support optimal growth, development, and brain function.
5. Creating a Low-Stress Mealtime Environment
Rigid mealtime behaviors or anxiety around eating can make meals challenging for families of autistic children. Our team of dietitians can suggest structured meal routines, visual schedules, and gentle approaches to trying new foods to create a more positive mealtime experience.

Common Questions About Working with an Autism Dietitian
1. How Do I Know If My Child Needs an Autism Dietitian?
If your child:
- Eats a very limited variety of foods
- Avoids certain textures, flavors, or food groups
- Has frequent digestive issues
- Struggles with growth, weight gain, or nutrient deficiencies
- Experiences stress or anxiety around mealtimes
Then working with an autism dietitian can be beneficial in creating a more balanced, nutritious, and stress-free approach to eating.

2. Do You Work with Autistic Adults?
Yes! Nutrition challenges don’t stop in childhood. We work with autistic teens and adults to help with:
- Balanced meal planning for independent living
- Managing digestive health concerns
- Building healthy eating habits tailored to sensory needs
- Grocery shopping & meal prep strategies
- Mindful eating techniques to connect with your body’s hunger and fullness signals
- And more!
3. Do You Offer Virtual Sessions?
Yes! We provide virtual consultations so clients can access expert nutrition support from anywhere. We are currently serving Canadian residents in Ontario, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, as well as U.S. residents in select states, including New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Texas, and California.
4. Are Your Services Covered by Insurance?
Our services are private pay and we do not bill directly to insurance, however many insurance plans in the US offer out-of-network reimbursement for dietitian services through a superbill. We recommend contacting your insurance company to confirm.
Additionally, Self-Direction Services from the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities in New York may cover our services. We also offer sliding scale spots and payment plans to make care more accessible.
For Canadian clients, many insurance plans cover dietitian services. We can provide individual receipts after each session for you to submit for reimbursement.
Real Client Success Stories: How an Autism Dietitian Can Help
We’ve worked with countless autistic individuals and their families, each with unique challenges and goals. Here are just a few examples of how personalized nutrition support can make a difference. Please note that names have been changed to maintain confidentiality:

“Jackie’s practice is inclusive and accessible for anyone and everyone. I’m autistic and have struggled with eating food and proper nutrition for my whole life; Jackie was able to help me work within my sensory limits to find a healthy outlook regarding nutrition. She never tried to force me to “get over” my food aversions, and she always respected my boundaries regarding safe foods and sensory sensitivity. She is comfortable working with neurodiverse clients, and her practice stems from a weight-inclusive approach to healthy eating.
She is mindful of how taxing it can be to change food habits, and she is incredibly patient. I never felt like I was “failing” at nutrition while working with her. She also responds quickly when messaging her outside of scheduled sessions.
She is one of the kindest people I’ve ever met and I truly cannot recommend her practice enough.”
– Karen, autistic adult
“Working with Jackie has been such a pleasure! Having had really bad experiences with nutritionists and dietitians before, I was so happy to finally find someone this compassionate and informative. Jackie was able to help me work around my needs, and helped me not only form new habits, but also just better my relationship with food in general. Jackie is incredibly kind and easy to talk to, so chatting and coming up with new strategies and foods was always a pleasure. As an autistic adult, Jackie was super well-informed and able to help me increase my independence when it comes to food and cooking! :)”
-Francine, autistic adult
“Working with Jackie has been an eye-opening experience. I first came to her regarding my son’s narrow palette of food choices and needing to gain weight. He is ASD and ADHD and medication suppresses appetite so there is a lot of factors involved. Jackie had experience with these situations and so much knowledge to share while also being mindful of what is manageable for our lifestyle. My son has made progress in trying new foods and I have learned so much from her. So grateful for our sessions!”
-Melanie, mother of autistic child
