Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Our pediatric dietitian nutritionists support children and teens with a wide range of nutrition concerns, including picky eating, ARFID, digestive issues, nutrient deficiencies, growth concerns, meal-time challenges, food aversions, ADHD-related eating difficulties, and nutrition needs related to disabilities and chronic conditions.

Yes. Our team has experience supporting autistic children and teens using a neuro-affirming approach. We understand that sensory sensitivities, food preferences, routines, and communication styles can influence eating habits. We work collaboratively with families to support nutrition while respecting each child’s unique needs.

Absolutely. Many children with ADHD experience challenges related to appetite, meal routines, executive functioning, and eating while taking ADHD medications. We help families develop practical strategies to support adequate nutrition, growth, and consistent eating habits.

We take a supportive, pressure-free approach to picky eating. Rather than forcing children to eat certain foods, we help families create positive food experiences, reduce mealtime stress, and gradually increase comfort with new foods over time.

ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) is an eating disorder that involves restricted food intake due to sensory sensitivities, fear of negative consequences from eating, or lack of interest in food. ARFID goes beyond typical picky eating and can impact nutrition, growth, health, and daily functioning. Our dietitians can help children safely expand their diets and meet their nutritional needs.

While many children go through phases of picky eating, ARFID is generally more severe and can lead to nutritional deficiencies, poor growth, significant anxiety around food, or a very limited range of accepted foods. During an assessment, we can help determine whether your child’s eating challenges may be consistent with ARFID.

Yes. We frequently work with children who have limited food preferences due to sensory sensitivities, neurodivergence, anxiety, medical conditions, or ARFID. We use individualized strategies to help children feel more comfortable exploring and accepting new foods.

Many families come to us feeling exhausted by power struggles, stress, and conflict around food. We help parents develop strategies that reduce pressure at meals, support positive feeding relationships, and create a calmer mealtime environment for everyone.

Yes. Appetite suppression is a common side effect of many ADHD medications. We help families identify opportunities to maximize nutrition throughout the day, support adequate calorie intake, and ensure children continue to meet their growth and development needs.

Yes. We support children experiencing digestive concerns such as constipation, diarrhea, bloating, and other gastrointestinal symptoms. We work with families to identify contributing factors and develop practical nutrition strategies to improve digestive health.

Yes. If your child is underweight or struggling to gain weight appropriately, we can assess their nutritional intake, identify barriers to growth, and develop a personalized plan to support healthy weight gain and development.

If your child has low iron, vitamin D, B12, or other nutrient deficiencies, we can help identify dietary gaps, recommend food-based strategies, and determine whether supplements may be beneficial as part of their care plan.

When appropriate, we may recommend supplements to help address nutrient deficiencies or nutritional gaps. Any recommendations are individualized based on your child’s needs, dietary intake, medical history, and growth goals.

Yes. We have experience supporting children and teens with autism, ADHD, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and other physical or developmental conditions. Our recommendations are tailored to each child’s unique strengths, challenges, and goals.

Yes. Parent involvement is an important part of pediatric nutrition care. Depending on your child’s age, developmental level, and preferences, sessions may involve parents, caregivers, the child, or a combination of all three.

No. A formal diagnosis is not required. We work with many children who are experiencing feeding, nutrition, or growth concerns and are seeking support, regardless of whether they have received a diagnosis.

Every child is different. Some families notice positive changes within a few weeks, while others benefit from longer-term support. Progress depends on factors such as the child’s goals, medical history, feeding challenges, and level of family involvement.

Yes. We offer virtual nutrition counselling, making it easier for families across Ontario to access specialized support from the comfort of home.
